A volunteer who just keeps giving

December 12, 2012

Kelli has been a Distance Computer Comfort volunteer since February 2012. She lives in New Westminster (new window), British Columbia (new window), and has had two clients. One lives in Penticton and the other lives in Fort St. John, British Columbia.

Kelli heard about the Neil Squire Society (new window) through the Classroom and Community Support Worker program (new window) she is taking at Douglas College (new window). Through the program she was placed to intern at the Neil Squire Society. Kelli did a five week practicum in January with the Neil Squire Society’s Employ-Ability Program. Little did she know that she would like it so much that she would continue to volunteer, and she has continued ever since. “I enjoyed what I was doing. It’s the kind of work I want to do; working with people with disabilities.” says Kelli.

There are always challenges that people face while teaching, but Kelli has a clever solution when answering questions she doesn’t know the answer to, “research it on the internet.”

Kelli said she has had a “fantastic experience” with the Neil Squire Society. She has been able to get to know the clients and build relationships in the classroom as well as on-line. “I had one student that spent ¾ of the class laughing.” They say laughter is the best medicine.

“The Neil Squire Society is a great place. It gives people hope. There is no pressure and participants can learn at their own pace,” says Kelli.

Kelli’s life has changed a lot since volunteering with the Neil Squire Society. She is doing something completely different from what she expected. “I have realized that helping people is what I want to do.” Kelli returns to school in September but hopes to keep volunteering with the Neil Squire Society.
