We’re happy to announce another new Makers Making Change chapter (new window), this one in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Miles Macdonell Collegiate (new window), of the River East Transcona School Division (new window), is the site of our newest chapter. Miles Macdonell technology teachers Samantha-Rae Adamson and Cyrus Gervais-Tourangeau are the chapter leaders, but it’s really a student-led initiative.
“I had a couple kids who volunteered at the Manitoba Tech Summit last year, and there they met [Makers Making Change Central Region Coordinator] Suzanne [Winterflood],” explains Samantha. “The students took the lead.”
Miles Macdonell has a Hack Club, which sees students collaborate in programming, game development, among other activities. The student leaders of that club wanted to get involved with Makers Making Change to be more involved in the community.
“I think it’s a good way for them to do something, since this last year they haven’t really been able to do anything — do something that actually has an impact — I think’s really gonna boost their moods,” she continues.
“I think it’s more just about helping people,” says Cyrus. “I think they’re just eager to do something for others.”
The students are currently trying to find partnerships in the community and programs to work with.
While the chapter is just starting, the school has two 3D printers. Prior to the pandemic, the school regularly hosted Hackathons that were well attended, and the chapter is looking to host a Buildathon of their own in the next couple of months.
