Dr. Gary Birch, executive director of Neil Squire, will be invested into the Order of British Columbia (new window) during a ceremony at Government House on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 6 pm PST.
The Order of British Columbia recognizes exceptional individuals whose hard work, generosity of spirit and outstanding achievements have contributed immeasurably to the well-being of communities in British Columbia. It is the Province’s highest form of recognition.
This year’s ceremony honours 31 recipients from 2020, 2021, and from previous years who were unable to attend their ceremonies.
Dr. Birch was appointed to the Order of British Columbia in 2017 for his research and developments in brain-computer interface and other forms of assistive technologies which have changed the lives of people with disabilities by giving them greater independence. Dr. Birch was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame (new window) by the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (new window) in 1998. He became an officer in the Order of Canada in 2008 and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
