Neil Squire Society Executive Director to Receive the Province’s Highest Form of Recognition
BURNABY, British Columbia, December 1, 2017 – Dr. Gary Birch, Executive Director of the Neil Squire Society will be appointed to the Order of British Columbia (new window), along with fifteen other exceptional civic leaders who will receive the honor at an investiture ceremony at Government House in Victoria on December 14, 2017.
The Order of British Columbia recognizes exceptional individuals whose hard work, generosity of spirit and outstanding achievements have contributed immeasurably to the well-being of communities in British Columbia. It is the Province’s highest form of recognition.
Dr. Birch is recognized for his research and developments in brain-computer interface and other forms of assistive technologies which have changed the lives of people with disabilities by giving them greater independence. Dr. Birch was inducted into the Terry Fox Hall of Fame (new window) by the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (new window) in 1998. He became an officer in the Order of Canada in 2008 and was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
