We wanted to share this great blog post (new window) from Christie, a volunteer for our Distance Computer Comfort program.
A User Experience (UX) designer, she describes how volunteering as a computer tutor for people with disabilities led her to reflect on designing for accessibility and how some seemingly well-designed applications can be hard to use for people with disabilities.
“From a UX designer’s perspective, I was often surprised at how a feature that I had initially thought was designed well could unintentionally have a negative impact on the user experience for those who were not comfortable using technology,” she writes.
“I was humbled by the practical takeaways that served as a great reminder for me as a designer on what to look out for.”
She provides some great takeaways on designing for accessibility and some things to keep in mind during the design process.
