Creative Employment Options Helps Rodger Make a Difference in His Community

Creative Employment Options participant Rodger

Looking to strengthen his employment skills, Rodger joined our Creative Employment Options program in August.

Rodger was born with epilepsy, and different factors like excessive heat, stressful situations, lack of sleep, or alcohol use can trigger an epileptic seizure. He was also diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and depression while attending school in the mid-90’s. More recently, Rodger had an injury to his right shoulder that required surgery, causing lasting agility issues and limiting his ability to lift heavy items.

Working one-on-one with his Job Developer, Rodger was able to develop his employment skills, including learning how to write a resume and cover letter, and tailor both to fit a specific job posting.

He explored different career paths and reignited his passion for supporting people within the local community. Using his networking abilities, Rodger successfully connected with an employer and received a job offer at an Indigenous organization that serves the local community in Regina. Here, Rodger would be able to fulfill his passion, and he was ready to begin working as a shelter support worker and make a positive difference in his community.

Through the Creative Employment Options program, Rodger received the supports needed to ensure his success, including a pair of sunglasses to shield him from bright or flashing lights and mitigate the possibility of a seizure.

Following his time in Creative Employment Options, he was kept on as a shelter support worker for the rest of the winter season and he has plans to return next year.

Rodger credits his success and happiness to the support he received from the Neil Squire team.

“I used to fear that my employer would look at my disability rather than look at me. I am glad that I don’t have to hide it anymore,” he shares. “The Neil Squire Society made that possible, I used to be limited for tasks, and I felt like I’m letting down my team, but thanks to their help, my disabilities don’t get in my way.”
