Carmen Uses Her Newfound Computer Skills to Host a Retreat

October 26, 2021

We recently received a great update from a former Digital Jumpstart participant.

Carmen smilingWith the help of computer skills she learned from our Digital Jumpstart program, Carmen has been hosting a retreat on her property that she advertises on Hipcamp (new window).

“It’s been going really good,” she explains. “I only opened up September 15th, but since then every weekend I’ve been pretty much booked.”

In 2009, Carmen’s Achilles tendon ruptured. While in the hospital for surgery, she caught a superbug. A year ago, she also had to undergo a hip replacement. Today, she lives with three types of arthritis.

She learned about Neil Squire from Make A Change Canada (new window)’s Business Abilities (new window) program, and joined our Digital Jumpstart program and received computer tutoring so she could transition into a web design course. She also received equipment to be able to study to the best of her ability.

Carmen went from basic computer skills to designing and coding websites.

Now, the retreat she hosts is easy for her to maintain, and helps keep her son busy.

“When I became disabled, you get really down,” she says. “But I tell you the people I’ve met through Neil Squire, Make A Change, and Business Abilities, they have been so helpful and so positive and encouraging. I don’t really know where I’d be without them today to tell you the truth.”
