Calvin has cerebral palsy (opens in a new window) and uses an electric wheelchair. Ten years ago, he had participated in the Neil Squire Society’s Prairie Region Group Program. He returned in 2018, this time as a guest speaker for current program participants.
The 12-week Group Program focuses on wellness and disability management. It aims to empower participants to return to work and to function at an optimal level within their work environments. Participants explore a number of topics, such as resume and cover letter writing, stress management, networking, and interviewing skills.
Calvin gave a presentation to share his insights and progress over the last decade. He explained that the Group Program provided him the tools to maintain employment and find success.
After completing the program, Calvin was able to find employment with Walmart and has been employed there ever since. “Neil Squire is the reason I have a job now,” he says.
That is not all. Calvin has been pursuing his passions: he has gone on to become an advocate for persons in wheelchairs, and a part-time DJ.
We are glad that Calvin came back to meet us and to share his knowledge with the current participants. We wish him the very best.
