In his youth, Blake was involved in a life changing vehicle accident that subsequently resulted in a serious spinal cord injury leaving him paralyzed from the chest down and now requires the use of a wheelchair.
However, he learned to thrive on adversity and developed an unbreakable spirit. Blake has devoted himself in helping others facing similar circumstances as his own. He has previously worked as a Services Coordinator for Spinal Cord Injury Saskatchewan (new window), and was recruited by Rick Hansen to become an ambassador for the Rick Hansen Foundation (new window).
Blake is also a world-class athlete where he has competed and represented Canada on the world stage for adaptive water skiing. In his sport, Blake can be seen flying through the air on his water skis doing tricks that defy the laws of physics.
Blake joined Neil Squire’s Working Together program in November 2020 on the recommendation of Regina’s Work Prep Centre (new window). Blake had two goals in mind when he first started working with his job developer — build his self-confidence in the skills needed to effectively navigate the job market, and find a position that would allow him to thrive and continue to grow both personally and professionally.
He benefited from learning how to update his resume, tailoring his cover letter for positions in data entry, office administration, and sales. He also acquired advanced job searching knowledge.
“This program has taught me to be persistent when applying and to not get discouraged or give up. It has taught me how to prepare my resume and cover letter, and how to conduct myself in an interview should the opportunity present itself,” Blake explains.
As Blake progressed his way through Working Together, such an opportunity did present itself when he managed to connect with Capital Automotive Group (new window) about a sales position and was brought in for an interview. Despite not being offered the position, Blake impressed the hiring managers with his tenacity and positive attitude and was told they would attempt to find a spot that would be better suited for his talents.
A few months later, Capital Automotive Group reached out to Blake and invited him to attend another interview for a position that he would be perfect for.
Blake was successful and was hired on as a Service Appointment Coordinator. In his new role, Blake is responsible for scheduling vehicle maintenance appointments, promoting Capital Auto’s services and interacting with customers on a daily basis.
Blake could not be happier with his new job!
