Strum Insurance (opens in a new window) has over 80 years of experience serving Nova Scotians for their insurance needs and five offices throughout the province. This past spring, their Windsor location was looking to add to their staff and wanted to differentiate from whom they may typically hire.
“We were looking to give an opportunity to someone and started actively trying to find ways to recruit,” says Robyn Cook, Director of Operations at Strum Insurance. The business was then connected to Zach.
Zach is a recent university graduate with a degree in business administration. He has Asperger Syndrome (opens in a new window). He joined Neil Squire’s Working Together Program to become job-ready. The program also helped Strum Insurance navigate hiring a person with a disability.
Zach turned out to be the perfect fit. His skills in organization and attention to detail made him excel as a data processor. He has enjoyed learning about the insurance industry and has found himself being more social in his personal life.
Before starting the position, Zach wondered how he would interact with his coworkers socially. Now, he says the best part of his job is “My coworkers. Everyone has been really great to work with, and has made the learning part easy. I’m really happy I work here.”
Strum Insurance is pleased to have Zach as part of their team too. Robyn says, “We don’t think of Zach’s disability; he is just a part of our team like everyone else. And he does great work. We would happily have a hundred Zachs here!”
